Super Transition Arrays: A Tool for Studying Spectral Properties of Hot Plasmas

For the theoretical study of X and extreme-UV spectra ions in plasmas, quantum mechanics brings more detailed results than statistical physics. However, it is impossible to handle individually billions levels that must be taken into account order properly describe hot plasmas. Such can gathered electronic configurations or superconfigurations (groups configurations) corresponding calculations rely on appropriate methods, for local non-local thermodynamic equilibrium In this article we present basic principles Super-Transition-Array approach as well its practical implementation. During last decades, performed with SCO code (Superconfiguration Code Opacity) have been compared opacity measurements. The includes static screening by plasma suited studying density effects (for example pressure ionization) equation state. recently developed SCO-RCG Opacity combined Robert Cowan’s “G” subroutine) combines methods from fine-structure (detailed-level-accounting) using subroutine RCG code. enables us obtain very significantly improve interpretation experimental spectra. formalism still cornerstone several codes, new ideas are emerging, such Configurationally Resolved-Super-Transition-Array extension Partially Resolved-Transition-Array concept superconfiguration method.
